How do I get whitelisted on an SMP?

Join the Discord and look for an applications channel. Most ask what you want to build and how you handle other players' stuff. Expect to wait — the wait is doing the same job as the questions.

What is the difference between an SMP and a public server?

An SMP is whitelisted and small enough that people know each other; a public server takes anybody. The first is quieter and stickier, the second is busier and more anonymous.

Minecraft communities

Minecraft Discord servers hold the parts of an SMP the game cannot: whitelist applications, build showcases, coordinates, downtime notices and the arguments about where the next base goes. Most whitelisted worlds will not let you connect until you have joined theirs.

About Minecraft communities

A Minecraft server is a world that keeps running whether or not anybody is in it, and the Discord is where the people who live there stay in contact. For whitelisted SMPs it is also the door — applications, rules and approvals happen there before the game does.
